Download In Everything Give Thanks

As is often the case, I met some interesting In Everything Give Thanks along the way. Some were chatty; others weren't. On one leg of my flight, I talked to my seatmate, sharing a little of the challenges our family faced last year and my thankfulness despite circumstances. She swiveled toward me and said, "Wait a minute. Both your mother and mother-in-law died, and your son had a severe injury and two major surgeries. How can you be thankful for any of that? Many times gratitude doesn't make sense to those unfamiliar with the habit of cultivating a thankful heart, In Everything Give Thanks.

Based on the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17we can assume probably only a tenth of us make an effort to express gratitude, since just one of the ten returned to thank Jesus for his healing. So, is it reasonable to be thankful even when things are difficult? On the surface, no, but I believe we can train ourselves to be grateful even when waves In Everything Give Thanks adversity and challenge crash over us.

Although last year is one I gladly consigned to history at year end, now that I am beyond the immediacy of crises, I more readily understand the reasons to praise God even in challenging times.

The Bible tells us to give thanks in all circumstances, not just when things are going well. Here are some reasons we can do that:. God is our hope — Job experienced heartache, adversity, acute physical pain and mental anguish, but despite all he endured he could still say. Trusting God to work out the details of what we're In Everything Give Thanks through is probably one of the biggest challenges of our Christian walk.

We fool ourselves into believing we have control over our lives with all our planning, but difficulties are less stressful when we relinquish our efforts and acknowledge that God is in control.

We have the assurance of God's love and salvation — Romans reminds us that no matter what we go through, nothing can separate us from God's love. If we've trusted Christ as Savior, our salvation and eternity is secure. This promise is balm for the soul when doubts and fears overwhelm. Hardship lasts only for a season — When we're going through something really hard, at the time, it's difficult to imagine things will ever improve.

And Satan considers these seasons an opportune time to whisper lies like "a loving God wouldn't allow this in your life" or "God doesn't care about you because he's not coming to your rescue. God cares. He sees. The secret to living a life of thanks is for us to live the person of thanks—Jesus Christ—who is now the Spirit in our spirit. Jesus Christ lived a life of giving thanks in everything, and He now lives in us. In ourselves, we have no way to genuinely thank God for everything, including the distressing, troubling, and unpleasant things.

In order to thank God for these things, for all things, we have to live by a new person, by Christ in us. In the Gospels, we see wonderful examples of Jesus giving thanks. We often see Him give thanks to the Father for the basic provision of food and for hearing His prayers. But the Gospels also record how Jesus offered thanks and praise in even the most adverse situations. In this rejection, Jesus suffered the slander of the very people He had come to save.

But what was His response? In versesHe instead prayed this prayer:. Yes, Father, for thus it has been well-pleasing in Your sight. How wonderful Jesus is! Here we see Jesus actually extolling the Father, acknowledging His will in all things, including the rejection and slandering. He gave thanks to the Father in all situations and for all things. Paul could give thanks in everything because he was one with this wonderful Jesus who was living in him and who lived a thanking life in all situations.

And because Paul knew that all believers have Christ in them, he was confident in exhorting us to do the same. We too can give thanks in everything by being one with the Lord who lives in usgiving thanks in His name, in His person. In ourselves, we may be unthankful, bemoan our situation, and complain to God and to everyone else. But as we contact the thankful One, the Lord Jesus Himself who lives in our spiritwe are joined to Him practically. We then experience His person being our person, and His thanking life being our life.

We live and act in the person of Christ in our spirit and enjoy His life in us. And spontaneously our prayers are filled with praise and thanks to Him for all things. All verses are In Everything Give Thanks from the Holy Bible Recovery Version.

  7. Thanksgiving 1 Thessalonians In Everything Give Thanks. If you have your Bibles, I’d invite you to turn with me to 1 Thessalonians 5. Since we’re worshiping together on Thanksgiving morning, it seems appropriate that we think for a few moments about the distinctive nature of Christian thanksgiving.
  8. Give Thanks "in everything" vs. "for everything" The misunderstanding comes in thinking we’re supposed to give thanks “for” everything when God is leading us to give thanks “in” everything. It’s a concept some of us struggle with and resist, thinking God is telling us to be thankful “for” the difficulties.
