The music is Album) and engaging, whilst being something truly original and inspirational. The album features collaborations with Hard Ton and King Aus. Playing out like a full artistic statement rather than just a collection of tracks, the odd time signatures, innocent and waify vocals, muted acid lines and hypnotic loops layered up by Nina all work subtly at pulling you into her world. A superbly, executed and accomplished debut album that has already set MP3 bar high for electronic albums this year.

The repeated mantra and carnal moans feel sterile, as if pumped through a tannoy system, sitting atop an unobtrusive rhythmic chug of pistons and gears, and the sound of two cinderblocks shifting in unison, advancing with no resolve, pushing bodies to the grind.
It would make a decent bridge on the dancefloor, but a five-minute mixing tail with no real shift-up exposes a lack of substance between the scaffolding. Kraviz invests renewed faith in Nina Kraviz - Nina Kraviz (File voice as a load-bearing pillar rather than mere atmospheric accoutrement, but having emerged from behind the smokescreen it appears the lustre has faded from her eyes.
Spinning a spoken-word tale across the title track, she's present but featureless, shooting for coldwave detachment but landing closer to monotony. Things aren't helped by the simplistic bassline and lack of tension: the components lie neatly next to one another with zero dynamic interplay, so when Nina's voice rolls back after an extended build, any chance of release evaporates.
The " Home Listening Mix"—packaged with three other alternate versions on the digital version—is a lot better, wiping the grey vaseline smear off the mix and letting the beat and chirruping effects fill space properly. The same problem shows up on the nondescript pair of songs padding the end of the EP. These tracks utilise similar tools—sparse claps, mild hiss, vague menace, head-on-desk thud—to little effect. A welcome exception comes in the form of "Black White", MP3 track exploring different terrain with an Afro-Caribbean lilt.
The wooden timbres and looser rhythm provide a marked switch-up as the song ramps in intensity before breaking into a groove redolent of the kind of funky house prevalent during its initial inception. Kraviz's restrained yelps find their way through the dark, working as a tidy accompaniment to the guitar notes bobbing through the hypnotic final third and petite melody set in amongst the chinking percussion.
It proves a lone takeaway on an overlong and underdeveloped release. Skip to content Search query All Results. Pitchfork is the most trusted voice in music. Nina Kraviz Mr. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Open share drawer. Featured Tracks: Play Track "Mr.
