A Center for Biological Diversity poll released last week reports that a majority of Americans worry about population growth sparking global warming, killing off endangered species or causing other environmental mayhem.
And, they say, we have a "moral responsibility" to do something about it. Nevertheless, the notion that humanity is a blight upon the planet is a long discredited idea, long nurtured by a vocal cadre of fearful prophets. Thomas Malthus predicted more than years ago that world population growth would outpace food production, triggering mass starvations and disease. InPaul and Anne Ehrlich, along with Obama administration "science czar" John Holdren, authored a textbook that discussed population control, including the unsavory possibility of compulsory abortions.
As recently asAnne Ehrlich compared humans to cancer cells. Yet, science says otherwise. Indeed, what Attenborough, the Ehrlichs and Holdren all have in common is an ignorance of demographic trends. Anyone who believes that humans will overrun the Plague Of The Earth - Human As Disease - Plague Of The Earth / Destroyer (CDr) like ants at a picnic is ignoring the data.
According to the World Bank, the world's fertility rate is 2. I wouldn't be so sure about that with regards to the baby boom after a big war. Historically in warfare, lots of Plague Of The Earth - Human As Disease - Plague Of The Earth / Destroyer (CDr) die, but few women do.
Females are the limiting factor in the maximum possible population growth and polygamy was common prior to the modern era. Even in the modern world, there are many single unmarried mothers and sex outside of marriage is common. This suggests to me that the deaths of the men is not likely to have a significant effect on the future population.
WW2 is a bit of an exception because of the significant number of civilian casualties, but even so the deaths of men was higher than that of women. I'm not sure I fully understand, but do you mean to say that it is not that the population would increase only 2 billion if wars and plagues did not happen, but upto 5 billion.
That is What would've happened to us if there were 12 billion on earth right now? Surely our scientific advances wouldn't have been that advance to support this like outer planet colonization.
