Find a Hotel. Related Stories. The waiters weren't really that keen on having to serve us, or anyone for that matter. There were only another 3 groups in the whole place. When the owner and chef, Anetta, came to take our order there was what we hope was a misunderstanding. What we ordered and what we received where 2 different things altogether. Asking for anchovy starter, a seafood pasta to share and a veal to share turned in to a anti pasta plate, fettucini bolognese, cannelloni and a seafood pasta.
We actually said when the bolognese was suggested, we didn't like this type of sauce. When the food arrived, we more than surprised. To be fair, they offered to take it back and cook something else. But, by this stage, we decided to eat it and have a laugh about it. The food itself was OK, but nothing to write home about - or on tripadvisor for that matter. The wine selection is pretty basic - red or white! Served in half carafes it's unlikely to win any awards, anytime soon.
Speaking with some locals the next day, they mentioned that a lot of the time, Anetta, orders for you, despite what you actually request. I suppose there is some charm to this, but it didn't click for us.
And the billing system is quite unique as well - with Anetta coming to the table at the end of meal and coming up with a total based on, we're not sure what.
It wasn't for us, but maybe we got them at the end of the busy season and they are in need of a break. Tucked away on Via Roma in Ravello is a trattoria-pizzeria that my wife and I were not expecting to deliver such a memorable dining experience.
The waiter, Maurizio, has a warm and Remember This Cumpà face as if to say, "Please come in, sit down, we'll take wonderful care of you. She greets each of the guests as if you were dining in her home. Our first night we ordered too much food for just the two of us and she immediately suggested that we reduce our choices. She was right, each menu item is plentiful and we had probably ordered enough for a family of five.
When the food got to our table we continued to look at each other wide eyed. My wife insisted that I try her hearty veggie soup and I would pop a forkful of tomato, mozzarella, and surprise prosciutto in her Remember This Cumpà.
The tomatoes were the most flavorful we had eaten our entire stay in Italy. The lamb cutlets burst with flavor so much so my that the fork and knife gave way to fingers to make sure no lamb was left on the bone. My wife has reduced all forms of carbohydrate intake fell in love with the fusilla. She managed to mouth the words, "It's so saucy and cheesy, Remember This Cumpà, just the way I love it," between bites.
As we were getting up from our table she places three oranges she has picked from her own tree as she says, "buona notte," with a twinkle in her eye. Danilo, Remember This Cumpà nephew, does the cooking and is the "only male in a family of 35 women". It seems as if all the attention and training from the women turned him into a fine chef.
This is a family restaurant, with an emphasis on family. Our second night in Ravello, not a restaurant would serve us after 9pm because it was November and the off-season. We showed up at pm at Cumpa' Cosimo and told Maurizio that we would take our food to go because we knew it was very late. Mautizio insisted that we sit and eat a proper meal. At pm after devouring a sinful "rum baba" and my wife eating her ricotta cheese cake, instead of Netta rushing us out the door, she was wonderful enough to ask us what dessert we liked the best.
As we left, she snuck an extra cheese cake in our doggy bag. We will forever remember Ravello for its fantastic views and rustic charm but we will long for the family welcoming we received at Cumpa' Cosimo. We loved the food and absolutely recommend this place for the service and family atmosphere. Nice atmosphere and good food. We had two pastas and enjoyed them very much. Service was friendly and helpful. Nice place for lunch when you visit Ravello. During each of our trips to Italy, my wife, Amy, and I return to restaurants that are old favorites while being on the lookout for something new and special.
We found Cumpa' Cosimo after being taken there by the driver who had driven us to Pompeii. This is a nice family owned restaurant. The food was very good and the service was very good.
The restaurant was very busy while we were there. Prices were reasonable and we were very pleased with what we received for what we paid.
One of my favorite restaurants in the world is Cumpa Cosimo in Ravello. Netta and her brother, Lucca, and family have run the restaurant for several generations and are always there and they do it right.
The veal scaloppini with lemon is the best! Order a liter of the table wine de la casa. This is a simple place but has served the not so famous, like me, and the famous Jackie Kennedy, Gore Vidal, even Humphrey Bogart. Own or manage this property?
